Ben Carson Biography Moves to TV Feb. 7, 2010
Oscar-winner Cuba Gooding Jr. to portray Adventist surgeon

Cuba Gooding Jr., a veteran actor who received an Academy Award® for his performance in Jerry Maguire will portray Dr. Benjamin S. Carson in a TNT Original television movie, “Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story,” the cable network said. Kimberly Elise, two-time NAACP Image Award winner, portrays Sonya Carson, Ben’s mother, and Aunjanue Ellis appears as Carson’s wife, Cindy.

The movie, which is scheduled for broadcast on the evening of February 7, 2009, is based on Carson’s inspirational memoir, and will trace his journey from frustrated inner-city kid to director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center.

Carson, a member of Spencerville Seventh-day Adventist Church in Silver Spring, Maryland, is also noted for his Ben Carson Scholars program aimed at helping other urban youths with education and personal development. He also was a 2008 recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom

Gifted Hands is more than just an inspirational tale of overcoming seemingly impossible odds to succeed,” TNT senior vice president Michael Wright said in a statement. “It’s that rare story of finding something deeper and more meaningful in life, while facing the challenges of the world with faith, hope and courage. We are honored to be making this film and to have Cuba Gooding Jr. in the lead role. He is truly one of the most gifted actors working today.”

Carson’s memoir, which was written with Cecil Murphey and first published by Zondervan in 1996, describes life as a child on the mean streets of Detroit. Carson faced difficulties early on, when his father abandoned the family. “All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my mother,” Carson later wrote. Sonya Carson pushed her son to become the best he could be through education. Carson recalled her saying over and over to him, “Bennie, if you can read, honey, you can learn just about anything you want to know. The doors of the world are open to people who can read.”

With a new pair of glasses, and the encouragement to spend time at his local library, Carson dove into the world of books. His scholastic performance improved dramatically. He went on to Yale University and the University of Michigan Medical School, refusing to give up on the dream he and his mother had for his future, even when prejudice and negative peer pressure threatened to stand in his way. Carson is now a best-selling author and director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University Hospital, where he pours everything he has into helping young people overcome their medical limitations and fulfill their own dreams.

President George W. Bush bestowed the Medal of Freedom on Carson at a ceremony in June 2008 (see Adventist Review, July 3, 2008). In the White House announcement, Carson was honored for working throughout his career “to improve the lives of those suffering from neurological disorders. His groundbreaking contributions to medicine and his inspiring efforts to help America’s youth fulfill their potential have strengthened our nation.”

At the time, President Bush praised Carson and his wife, Candy, for founding The Carson Scholars Fund, Inc., a non-profit national scholarship fund that promotes similar academic achievement by recognizing and rewarding students in grades 4-11 who demonstrate academic excellence and commitment to community.

During the ceremony, Bush also singled out Carson's mother, Sonya, who--seated near Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and former Senator Bob Dole--stood to receive the president's welcome. "Some moms are simply forces of nature who never take 'no' for an answer," Bush said. "I understand," he added, alluding to his own mother and eliciting laughter from the audience.

Cuba Gooding Jr. earned an Academy Award for his dynamic, breakthrough performance in 1996’s Jerry Maguire, for which he also received a Screen Actors Guild Award® and a Golden Globe® nomination.

SPENCER SDA CHURCH BURNS MORTGAGE

The members of the Spencer Seventh-day Adventist Church gathered to celebrate their final loan payment for the church’s sanctuary addition with a “mortgage burning” ceremony on Saturday evening, September 10, 2005. The congregation voted to build the addition in Fall 2000, began construction in February 2001, and moved worship services into the new sanctuary in June 2001. However, the offerings continued to pour in over the next four years and resulted in the early retirement of the debt.

Dean Whitlow led song service and the opening hymn Rejoice, Ye Pure in Heart, followed by a prayer by Pastor David Fish. The Children’s Bell Choir, led by Katie Iacobazzi, provided special music. Then Elder Gary Thurber, President of the Indiana Conference of Seventh-day Adventists (SDA), presented a short sermon on God’s grace, saying, “It will put in our hearts a desire to find out where we are in earth’s history and to live righteous lives that reflect the character of God.”

Using the devastation from Hurricane Katrina as an example, he demonstrated how quickly all human plans can be destroyed and the need for faith in Jesus. Elder Thurber then shared stories and answered prayers from volunteers who traveled to Bass Memorial Academy near Purvis, Mississippi, helping rebuild roofs, distributing supplies, and providing meals to evacuees in the area. He also announced that FEMA has asked the Seventh-day Adventist Church in various states to handle the warehouses where businesses will be sending items to donate to the relief effort.

Following the sermon, Pastor Fish and first elder Steve Pickett came forward and set a match to a symbolic mortgage document, much to the delight of the youngsters in the group. Elder George Crumley, Indiana Conference Treasurer, closed the service with a prayer of gratitude.

SDA Community Service Center Opens in Ellettsville

The Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Community Service Center, formerly located on
the south side of the square in Spencer, officially moved to Eagle’s Landing
Complex, Suite 110, in Ellettsville, with a dedication celebration on Saturday,
January 15, 2005. Barbara Hainey of Spencer and Jeanette Hainey of
Mooresville, both members of the Bloomington SDA Church, manage and operate the
Center that serves both Monroe and Owen Counties. Dorothy Sowder, member of
the Spencer SDA Church, works in cooperation with them in serving the needs of
Owen County residents.

After opening prayer by Gary Ruba, first elder of the Bloomington SDA Church,
Cathryn Kuszmaul of the Spencer SDA Church provided a brief history of
Community Service Centers. Originally known as Dorcas Welfare Societies, SDA
Community Services have expanded to provide good used clothing, limited bedding
and household items, and related assistance to area residents needing help as a
result of burn-outs, unemployment, illness, etc. Referrals are primarily made
through local social service organizations.

Bloomington Pastor Fernando Ortiz and Spencer Pastor David Fish offered prayers
of dedication. Barbara and Jeanette Hainey concluded the service by
singing, "May I Reflect Your Love," with Barbara on the guitar. Afterwards,
visitors enjoyed a tour of the facility and refreshments.

The Community Service Center is a member of the Indiana National Voluntary
Organization Active in Disaster (INVOAD) and works closely with the American
Red Cross and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The church’s
statewide Disaster Relief Program steps in when disasters involving more than
50 people occur in Indiana. Their disaster van is fully stocked with 700
blankets and quilts, 700 sheets, and 700 personal packets. Larger scale
disasters occurring around the world activate the Adventist Disaster Relief
Agency (ADRA). ADRA has set up a crisis command center in Bangkok, Thailand,
to coordinate its network-wide response to the tsunami in Indonesia, Thailand,
Sri Lanka, and India. ADRA International committed US$500,000 of private funds
as part of the agency’s initial response. The ADRA Network and funding
partners have already committed more than US$3 million. Check www.adra.org for
updates or to donate.
